Medicare

Medicare rebates can make clinical psychology more affordable. This page explains, in plain language, who is eligible, how much the rebate is and what you need to do before your first appointment.

The short version

Individual telehealth consultation, 50 to 60 minutes: $330

Medicare rebate with a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan: $149.05 per session

Your out of pocket cost after the rebate: $180.95 per session

Who is eligible

To claim a Medicare rebate you need a referral and a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your general practitioner under the Better Access initiative. Your doctor completes an assessment and decides whether you meet the criteria. A psychiatrist can also refer you. You do not need a plan to be seen at Let It Go Psychology, but you do need one to claim a rebate.

How much you get back

Allison is an endorsed Clinical Psychologist, so her sessions attract the higher clinical psychology rebate. With a valid referral and plan, the rebate for a telehealth consultation of at least 50 minutes is $149.05 (Medicare Benefits Schedule video telehealth item 91167, fee effective 1 July 2026). The Better Access initiative currently allows up to ten individual sessions in a calendar year, with a review by your referring doctor after the first six.

What to do before your first appointment

One. See your general practitioner and ask about a Mental Health Treatment Plan.

Two. Book your first appointment online.

Three. Complete your intake and consent forms, which are emailed to you once your appointment is confirmed.

Four. Send your Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral letter securely before your first appointment, using the instructions included with your booking confirmation. Sending them early means your rebate can be processed from the very first session.

Reports to your doctor

At sessions six and ten Allison provides a brief report to your referring doctor. It contains general progress information, any questionnaire results and recommendations for ongoing care.

What Medicare does not cover

Cancellation and non attendance fees cannot be claimed through Medicare. Medicare rebates do not apply to group or professional development sessions. You can claim through Medicare or through private health insurance for a given session, but not both.

Please note

Let It Go Psychology cannot guarantee your eligibility for Medicare, the approval of a rebate or the number of sessions funded. Those decisions rest with your referring doctor and Services Australia.
